Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and a time for fasting, praying and contemplation. During the month of Ramadan, Allah revealed the first verses of the Quran, celebrated as the ‘Night of Power’(Lailat al qaeda): thousands of people gather around the ‘Amr Ibn Al As Mosque’.
Fasting is practiced during the entire month. After sunset the fast is broken with a meal known as Iftar. Free food is served to the poor.
Ramadan ends with the feast of Eid al Fitr: giving treats to the children, dressing in fine new clothes, visiting music festivals and fairs. People line up for Kakh-el Eid biscuits which are one of the most important elements of the feast.
